OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD IS ON FIRE

(Photo by aardvark from the Torontoist Flickr Pool)
But don't panic, it looks like the fire department has everything under control, though there are still some spots burning. At least no one was seriously injured, (that anyone knows of yet), unfortunately dozens of people are homeless. Check out the Toronto Star video here.

IN CASE YOU HAVENT HEARD
It's really quite cold outside and surprise! It's snowing again. (I don't think it has really stopped for more then 15 minutes in the last 2 weeks) However, there is no use in complaining when you have the opportunity to go check out the 4th installment of the Vans Matchplay contest series, tomorrow night at CBMK. Snow and freezing rain outside transform indoor parks into wooden oasis'of wonder every winter. Magical.

CATCHING UP WITH MITCH PRYMA

Another team rider update, this week we get acquainted with Orangeville's Mitch Pryma. The following is a brief question and answer that took place via email over the past couple of weeks, concerning University sex, Detroit hobos and sleeping in cars. Enjoy.
James: How long have you been riding for Change?
Mitch: That’s a hard question I think it’s been a year and a half now, hmm.... do you know how long its been?
James: I think it was right around the 2006 S.K.A.T.E Tour, so yeah, a year and a half is pretty close.
James: Do you remember when you came out for the Game of Skate in Windsor, when we had that black Dodge magnum for the tour? What were your thoughts when we first picked you up at the Greyhound Station? What expectations did you have when you joined us at Change? Be honest, you won’t hurt anyones feelings.
Mitch: (laughter) Yeah I remember that Dodge Magnum, when I got off the bus with no idea of who I was suppose to meet or what you guys looked like, then rolling along the river looking out the little hole in the window at Detroit because the skate tour decal took up most of the view. I didn’t have any expectations when I joined the team, I was just hyped to be getting boards, and still am.
James: When was the first time you skated Detroit? Any memorable spots?
Mitch: I think the first time I skated Detroit was after the tour,I took a trip with Wheeler and others, Hill showed us around Detroit, grimiest shit I’ve seen. The entire trip there was memorable, that slaughter house manny with pig blood everywhere and sketchy homeless people were wandering around the abandoned station behind it. I left my sweater on the curb at that Market spot and some homeless guy jacked it. (laughter)

James: So, you’re in University at Guelph taking business courses. Is this school move all just a strategy to learn some business skills to take over Change and run this company properly? If you have any tips let me know. (laughing)
Mitch: No plans to take over anything right now, just trying to figure out what I’m doing and business seems like something useful I can learn.
James: Yeah, I feel that, explore some options. Seriously though, how do you find you are coping with balancing school, Uni girls, skating and dorm living?
Micth: I’m trying, its hard getting time in for everything. School is not that bad, just studying and shit takes a long time. University girls are plentiful, dorm livings pretty sick, usually some good parties going on, and skating fills in the gaps. Weekends are usually when I skate the most, but when we get a break from classes I get to make up for some time by skating more.
James: Where do you usually sesh around school for a break?
Mitch: Depends on the weather, winter times got to take it indoor parks and such and just been exploring Guelph a bit, looking for some gems to skate.
James: In the long term, do you picture yourself staying in the GTA area? What aspirations do you have for life after school?
You mentioned a few weeks back that you may be taking a trip this winter to help get you through the season. Where are you planning on going?
5. As of now I don’t really have any long term plans, not sure where I’ll end up and not sure what my plans are for after school yet. I will see how things go. Yeah this winter I want to go on a trip, haven’t got solid plans yet but I want to go to Miami again, that place is sick.
James: Did you guys party at all the last winter when you were in Miami?
Mitch: Yeah we got to party, Lapchuk and Cini hooked it up. South Beach is the shit over March break, just chilling on the beach with some brews watching the ladies. (laughter The house we got to stay at was ballin, so usual people were kickin it there too.
James: If you could pick one spot back from the dead right now, just for the day where would it be and why? What is your favorite memory from that spot?
Mitch: If I could pick one spot to skate again I would have to say the Edge skate park in Orangeville, it closed down just under 2 years ago. That's where I started to skate and was there almost every night with all the homies, shreddin. I have so many memories of that place, it's what got me fully into skateboarding.

James: Remember that time that I gave you a handful of boards instead of paying for your bus ticket? How much did you hate me then? Now?
Mitch: (Laughing) Yeah I remember, wasn’t to worried, decks or money work for me. I didn’t hate you then and still don’t, (Laughter) to many fun times sleeping in cars and shit in MTL.
James: Sleeping in cars? When? I thought we stayed at Mike Mckay’s when we were in Montreal? Or maybe not..?lol..
Mitch: Yeah we didn’t quite make it the first night so we all slept in that Walmart parking lot, just sleepin baggin it on the ground and we attempted the car sleep. But then that night some people stayed at McKay’s but there were too many of us for his bachelor apartment, so another couple cars full of people slept out on the street. It was fun though, waking up to people creeping, looking in the window (laughing).
James: And the shower (fountain) in the park down the street, can’t forget that. (Laughing)
James: Well, let's stop there, before this gets to lengthy.
Any shout outs? People we should keep our heads up for? Threats?
Mitch: Yeah thanks to Adio shoes, Nomis clothing, Icarus skate Shop, oh and Change skateboards

TAKE ME BACK TO COSTA RICA

We are back in Canada after 2 warm weeks in Costa Rica and what do I come home to? Over a foot of snow. Absolutely fantastic. Sense the sarcasm?.Maybe these pictures from the trip will help you feel a little warmer.

Waterfall rock slide. So fun.
Jeff flailing off the rope swing. (this shit was sketchy)

A little front slasher on the notorious Piko highway ramp in Jaco. I have a suspicion that the reason so many people crack there skulls on this ramp is because of the board that you must skate it with. Peep the next pic for an example.

Coconuts hustlers

Does the monkey need a caption?

Gringo
Over the next few days we will have some real skate related news, including some clips from the soon to be Spain bound Hilliard and a brief interview with Mr. Mitch Pryma.
